Dabbling with DIY is causing a 300 per cent surge in Monday maintenance requests, according to Quotatis, the online service that connects people with local service providers.

DIY hangovers see requests for professional help triple Quotatis has found that requests for builders, plumbers, electricians and the like rises dramatically on Mondays, as homeowners seek to amend botched DIY projects attempted during the weekend

By contrast, Saturdays and Sundays account for just a tenth of calls received all week.

"With time on their hands at the weekends, people are tempted to have a go themselves if something needs fixing at home," said Derek Vaughan, managing director at Quotatis.

"But more often than not, something goes wrong".

"By Monday morning, people concede defeat and are ready to call in the professionals, which is why we see such a surge in requests at this time of the week".

"DIY has now come to mean 'Destroy It Yourself''," explained Vaughan.

"Ultimately, ordinary homeowners are novices, and most jobs actually require an expert".

"By calling in a tradesperson to do the job from the start, people will end up saving time and money.".
