Top safety accreditation for Solar Windows

A REHAU product story

Solar Windows is one of the latest group of successful companies to join a leading edge scheme, designed to help industry improve its safety record.

The South Wales-based firm recently received accreditation from SAFEcontractor, a programme which recognises very high standards of health and safety practice amongst UK contractors.

Employing 50 people, Solar Windows is principally involved in the local authority and housing association marketplace and its most recent clients have included major players such as Denbighshire County Council and Sutton Housing Partnership.

The company's application for SAFEcontractor accreditation was driven by the need for an independent endorsement of the uniform high standard which already existed across the business.

Bob Jenkins, Business Development Manager, at Solar Windows says: "Our work in the public sector means we already have to operate to the highest levels of health and safety in order to secure and retain contracts.

However, it is still really pleasing to have our policies and expertise recognised and to be able to use the familiar logo in our future sales and marketing activities".

SAFEcontractor accreditation is expected to enhance Solar's ability to attract new contractors and its commitment to safety will be viewed positively by its insurers when the company liability policy is renewed.

Darran Hughes, Operations Director for SAFEcontractor at National Britannia who operate the scheme, said: "Major organisations can no longer run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have health and safety policies.

"More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that Solar Windows has done.

The firm's high standard has set an example, which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector".

Under the SAFEcontractor system, businesses undergo a vetting process which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice.

Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database which is accessible to registered users only via a website.

Employer organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database which enables them to vet potential contractors before they even step on site.
