Graphite Resources are planning to build a Biological and Mechanical Treatment Facility on the site, named Derwenthaugh Ecoparc which will accept municipal solid waste and a range of non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste.
Rhodar tendered for the contract along with six other asbestos removal and demolition contractors.
After successfully securing the project, work commenced in April 2006.
Through asbestos surveys undertaken by Dearle and Henderson in December 2005, asbestos was identified both internally and externally throughout the site (some 13 large industrial buildings).
Asbestos was found in roof sheets, steelwork cladding, ceilings, pipe insulation and electrical switchgear.
In total, around 10,000m of products containing asbestos were removed and disposed of during the demolition works.
The project was notified under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 with Rhodar acting as principal contractor.
Throughout the project, Rhodar managed demolition, asbestos surveying, analytical, electrical, mechanical and waste management contractors and also worked with utility companies.
Rhodar's Project Manager, Chris Golden said: "We were delighted to secure this project".
"Having now completed it, within the original agreed programme, to the agreed budget and to the client's satisfaction, we can class it a success".
William Thompson of Graphite Resources said: "Thanks to Rhodar, our development remains on target".
"The team worked professionally and efficiently and the project was delivered with no headaches, allowing us to concentrate on our development.".
