Roof-Pro offers supporting act

A Roof-Pro product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Oct 17, 2008

Roof-Pro support systems enabled building services to be upgraded without compromising the roof, either by overloading the deck or penetrating the waterproofing.

During consultancy for the building services at the Victory Services Club in Marble Arch, the appointed engineers became aware that they would have to utilise the external space on the roof to house a range of services equipment, including an air-handling unit (AHU), seven VRV condensers and the associated runs of cable tray and ducting.

Roof-Pro was commissioned to engineer a support solution that would not compromise the roof, either by overloading the deck or penetrating the waterproofing.

The site restrictions heavily influenced the design.

The service locations were divided into two areas on the roof, one area for the support of the AHU and the other for the support of the condensers.

Due to very limited space both service areas had to be located above roof lights measuring 2.6m wide x 6m long x 1.1m high.

The Roof-Pro design team engineered a support frame that spanned over the roof lights at a height of 1.3m.

Assessments conducted by Roof-Pro engineers specified the use of steel channels suitable for supporting the services over large spans and braced punch box section steels for upright support.

The need for maintenance access was incorporated into the design by the combining of an access platform and cat ladders with the services in both locations.

The off-site fabricated framework was erected on site, with each support base positioned without the need to penetrate the roof or form roofing details.
