Largest London theatre gets a Rockwool makeover

A Rockwool product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Mar 13, 2006

Rockwool insulation has been installed throughout London Coliseum's roof terrace and winter garden.

Rockwool insulation has been installed throughout London Coliseum's roof terrace and winter garden as part of the theatre's first ever substantial repair programme since it was opened in 1904.

Home to the English National Opera, the Grade II listed building is to be re-opened on 21st February following a £41million restoration project.

As part of the refurbishment programme, new build public spaces and facilities were created on the theatre roof and insulated with Rockwool's external wall insulated render system, RockShield.

The Rockwool RockShield benefits from the natural properties of Rockwool including thermal and acoustic insulation as well as being non-combustible, whilst also giving long term weather protection, (in excess of 50 years) and aesthetic improvement.

Tony Sheehan of Joyner Group, who installed RockShield, was also conscious of Rockwool products' fire performance.

"With any development, particularly in London, fire protection is extremely important" comments Tony.

"Not only is RockShield one of the most effective insulation products with respect to reducing the spread of fire, but it also has excellent insulation and water resistance properties".

"An additional benefit is that by using Rockshield, we where able to meet the acoustic performance of Rw 50dB required using a lightweight steel frame construction".

"It is also available in over 2000 different colours".

Brian Roberts, Managing Director, Rockwool comments; "This is one of the most prestigious landmarks in London and its renovation has created global interest so to be able to be involved is extremely important to the company".

"RockShield is an ideal solution for such a building as it is able to protect, to insulate and it can be tailored according to aesthetic requirements.".
