Rockwool Insulation has met the strict environmental criteria of IKEA to secure a huge contract win for the extension to its Doncaster distribution centre.

Rockwool Insulation has met the strict environmental criteria of IKEA to secure a huge contract win for the extension to its Doncaster distribution centre.

Supplying 70,000m2 of roofing insulation for the project, the new extension will make IKEA Doncaster the largest distribution site in the country at 133,000m2.

The new extension was decided as the immense popularity of IKEA stores in the UK, with over 33 million customers per year, has pushed demand to record levels.

With the UK being the second largest market in the world for IKEA furnishings, the development will help to ease pressure off other distribution centres throughout the country.

IKEA has stringent environmental policies that include using materials that are recyclable, biodegradable and renewable and inflict minimal impact on the environment.

These values are synonymous with Rockwool and were high on IKEA's agenda when assigning insulation for the extensive flat roof on the distribution centre.

Steve Hampshire, Site Manager for Shepherd Construction on the IKEA project, commented: "The Rockwool DuoRock boards were specified on this project for a number of reasons".

"They are easy and quick to install".

"Most importantly the product fulfils our environmental requirements as it 100% recyclable and ebergy and thermal efficient".

Chris Hall, Roofing Business Manager at Rockwool, echoed these thoughts; "We have had all our products independently tested by a life cycle analysis (LCA) which evaluates the full environmental consequences of a product over its lifetime".

"The environmental properties that Rockwool DuoRock possesses can save in application more than 1000 times the energy used for its production, making it one of the most environmentally friendly insulation products available".

Hall added, "The firesafe qualities of DuoRock were also a principal factor for this project".

"DuoRock roofing board is non-combustible and can withstand temperatures in excess of 1000C giving superior fire protection".

"These factors are key for the IKEA distribution centre which when complete will be the size of 31 football pitches and filled with flat packed furniture".

Rockwool continuously strives to produce and distribute energy efficient products and its strict environmental policy aims to minimise negative impacts on the environment.
