Rockwool, a leading manufacturer of rock based insulation products, has been commended for the second year running for its commitment and investment in environmentally friendly practices and procedure

The Environment Agency highlighted the companies exemplary performance in its annual environmental performance report published this week The Agency's 'Spotlight on business environmental performance 2002', its fifth annual report on good and bad environmental behaviour by businesses in England and Wales, singles out Rockwool, demonstrating how an industrial manufacturer can achieve environmental improvements without compromising economic success

Rockwool has invested more than ?12million in environmental improvements since 1996, carbon monoxide releases have been reduced from more than 500 tonnes per year to less than 10 and waste is recycled back into the process rather than being sent to landfill.

This has reduced the number of lorry journeys by about 9,000 a year.

Grant Wood of Environment Agency Wales comments; 'Rockwool is a prime example of a company recognising that being a good neighbour and improving the environment can result in substantial cost savings.

Environmental improvements can be a profit centre and they should not be regarded as a mere overhead.

All it takes is a little imagination and enthusiasm.' Brian Roberts, managing director of Rockwool comments; 'Our environmental policy is aimed at minimising the emission of pollutants to air, water and land, and using, wherever possible, sustainable resources.

We have also invested heavily in recycling technology and have developed various business partnerships so that we can incorporate carefully selected by-products from other industries as well as recycling stone wool itself.

This environmental housekeeping has had a considerable knock-on effect on cost savings, significantly improving our competitiveness in the marketplace.

In 2002, we were accredited the ISO 14001 Environmental Management standard.

In the same year, we won the Wales Environment Award for our year-on-year record of reducing the environmental impact of producing Rockwool insulation.

We will continue to make improvements as new technology and systems allow.'.
