Rockwool, has secured a major order with contractors Hathaway Roofing Ltd to supply a variety of high performance insulation products for the new terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.

The UK's leading manufacturer of stone wool insulation, Rockwool, has secured a major order with contractors Hathaway Roofing Ltd to supply a variety of high performance insulation products for the new terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.

Rockwool, whose clients include leading architects, contractors and specifiers throughout the UK, will supply Hathaways with 151,000 m of RW3 and RW5 slab, 10,000m2 of Hardrock and 120,000 m of 100mm Cladding Roll for the roof.

Rockwool materials were chosen for their unique combination of thermal, acoustic and fire insulation properties.

The contract is worth close to half a million pounds for Rockwool.

Phil Dodd, Technical Sales Consultant - North East comments, "This represents an important win for the company and we are delighted to be a chosen supplier for this exciting project.

The roof construction as designed and manufactured by Hathaway's is a major innovation.

Large structural panels will be pre-fabricated at their production unit in Bishop Auckland, Co Durham and transported to Heathrow to be simply craned into place.

This leaves only the final layer of insulation and the weatherproof top-sheet to be installed on site.

The aim is to significantly reduce the level of activity on what is already a complex site with enormous logistical issues to solve." As part of the tender process, Rockwool along with competitors in the sector had to undergo a rigorous selection procedure with Hathaway's supply partner CP Insulations and a procurement consultant working on behalf of the British Airports Authority.

Dodd continues, "Rockwool were required to satisfy comprehensive tender specifications including logistics, packaging, environmental and value for money.

We were chosen from among several companies not only because of the quality of the product, but also because our beliefs, values and ability met the client's requirements." The contract comes into effect immediately and Rockwool will continue to supply the product for the project well into 2005.
