Success of Window Energy Rating scheme

Mark Simm, Sales Director at Rockdoor explains how the introduction of Window Energy Rating (WER) scheme has been a huge success.
There are now 131 'A' to 'C' rated windows, and this is rising.
But, doors are also a major source of energy loss with up to a third of a home's carbon emissions escaping through windows and doors combined.
A thermally efficient house would have energy efficient doors as well as windows, and manufacturers are finding ways to achieve this.
The introduction of Door Energy Ratings (DERs) would be an effective spur to bring this about.
The British Fenestration Ratings Council (BFRC) was established to operate as the national rating system for the thermal performance of fenestration products.
Its website says the BFRC is the rating system for windows and doors.
WER is already a highly successful scheme.
Are doors going to get their own rating system? As a leading composite door manufacturer we would welcome energy ratings for doors, and we plan to play a leading role in the introduction of such a scheme.
The introduction of DERs with a grading system similar to WER would hopefully be recognised by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) and bring doors into line with other energy efficient products entitled to display the EST's swing tag logo.
Such a scheme would have a massive marketing potential for companies who can offer homeowners truly efficient doors to match their windows, and we look forward to the introduction of DERs.
