Stannah Lifts are supplying and installing three vertical platform lifts and a passenger lift into a very exciting venture in Bristol.
The ss Great Britain, Isambard Kingdom Brunel's first iron ship, launched in 1843, is the focal point of a brand new innovative visitors' museum at the ship's original dry dock within the Great Western Dockyard.
Stannah are taking a crucial role in the conservation project by providing a range of lifts for visitors to access all areas of the site.
Lift 1, a 3-stop passenger lift, will take visitors up through the new exhibition centre, on the quay beside the ship, to the bridge that links the museum to the Top/Weather Deck of the ship.
Lift 2, a vertical platform lift, will be entered from the Top/Weather Deck and takes visitors on a novel journey right in front of the ship's funnel to the Promenade Deck where they alight in the ship's galley.
Lift 3, a platform lift, lowers visitors from the Promenade Deck to the Saloon Deck of the ship.
Lift 4, the final platform lift, will take visitors from the quayside down through a vast glass plate, covered with a layer of water to represent the ocean, to the dry dock below.
Each of the Stannah lifts is being installed as part of an ambitious project to save this unique historic ship for the next 100 years and bring history to life for future generations to enjoy.
Stannah are working closely with all contractors to ensure the whole project will be ready for the attraction's 're-launch' celebrations in July 2005.
Brunel's ss Great Britain remains open to visitors throughout the programme of works.
