Refurbishment of UK's Biggest School
Completed
Sapa Building Systems has added to its extensive portfolio of school projects with the recent completion of a four-year long project at Great Barr School in Birmingham valued in excess of £2m.
Refurbishment at the school, the largest in the country with more than 2,400 pupils, began in 1998 and continued in planned phases through to completion late last year Whilst most school refurbishment work is traditionally carried out during holiday periods only, the scale of the Great Barr project was such that the glazing installation continued throughout term-time, requiring the specialist skills of fabricator and installer QG Architectural Aluminium Systems

New Electronic Specification Manual Launched
AutoCAD drawing facility; NBS specification clauses; profile drawings and general assembly details are just some features on Sapa Building Systems' newly launched electronic specification manual.
Barry Ball, Director of QG explained: 'Thorough planning and cooperation with the school and client meant that we were disrupting just six classrooms at any one time and these were replaced by temporary classrooms, meaning that the overall impact on the school environment was kept to an absolute minimum.
This approach, combined with meticulous on-site safety procedures, meant it was a great success for the school'.
The school, set in extensive grounds, benefits from a range of facilities including gymnasium, sports hall, Technology Centre and playing fields, as well as incorporating a sixth-form centre.
Throughout the school, existing glazing was replaced with fully suited Proframe 325 windows, Gridframe 312 curtain walling and high performance commercial entrance doors, providing high levels of thermal protection and simple operation and maintenance.
The client's project manager commented: 'The work that has been completed has made a remarkable difference to the school.
From original single glazed fenestration we now have buildings that not only look far better, but that are saving the school up to 1/3rd on their heating costs'.
