Sapa unveils building blast protection system

Sapa Building Systems has launched a blast protection system that sets new standards for performance, in partnership with Besam.

The system has been designed to provide maximum blast protection and security while also offering a cost effective, high performance and reliable solution.

The system was launched to an audience of facade design specialists and clients at Heathrow Airport.

The launch of the Besam ADS Blast Protection range of automatic doors and the Sapa Elegance PF and Powerframe range of curtain walling, windows and manual doors was widely welcomed at the Heathrow event.

Sapa and Besam produced a full range of products that represent a significant development in the provision of additional blast protection in modern buildings.

The companies provided an informative presentation on the subject of blast protection at the event.

The Besam and Sapa blast protection ranges offer an integrated solution that combines the expertise of both companies to produce a complete door and facade system which meets the security requirements of modern high risk buildings.

A blast is an extremely rapid release of energy which takes four forms: light, sound, heat and shockwave.

To mitigate these a facade system needs to have a suitable structure, special fixings, enhanced framing and specific glazing.

The Besam and Sapa blast protection ranges have been fully tested by an independent test body, GL Industrial Services, which was in turn monitored and evaluated by leading blast engineering consultants TPS Consult.

The system passed a level of testing which represented a 100kg TNT car bomb exploding at a 23.5m standoff, providing a certification of ISO EXV 25 Hazard Rating B.

The Besam ADS Blast Protection system, in conjunction with Sapa's Elegance PF and Powerframe ranges, offers a complete range of choices.

These include the incorporation of the Unislide automation system.

The Unislide system is a high performance purpose designed door leaf and side screen system, a rigorously tested swing door solution and a standard door rail and stile sight lines system that allows a mix of entrance, window and curtain wall systems on one facade with a shared aesthetic and integrated performance.

This breakthrough product sets the standard in automated blast protection door and facade systems, in protection and in size.

It offers the largest panel and pane sizes available on the market for greater flexibility and design choice.

The systems have been developed to provide protection in a wide range of applications including transport hubs, military installations, government buildings, petro-chemical structures and other buildings where there is a medium to high risk of exposure to blast.
