Korean railway safety benefits from SATRA

SATRA Technology Centre has been working with Roteco, the organization under authorization of the Ministry of Transportation for the Republic of Korea, which is responsible for testing and inspecting railway products in Korea.

A range of floors are being tested as part of the redevelopment of the Korean equivalent to the French 'metro' railway system.

As part of an ongoing contract, the SATRA floor coverings team has been testing floorings intended for use in Korean trains and stations for a variety of performance factors including: slip, resistance to a range of chemicals, flexibility, hardness, dimensional stability, reaction to fire and resistance to burns from cigarettes that are left unattended or stubbed out on the floor.

The team is also testing for the propensity to generate a static charge.

This requires assessing how much static is created between footwear and the floor surface when walking.

If too much static is created and the walker touches metal, it could lead to an electric shock.

SATRA's floor coverings team is renowned for its extensive laboratories that are equipped to test different flooring materials for physical, environmental and health and safety properties, and often creates bespoke tests for customers where national and international standards are not available.

SATRA's Steve Ferry said of the contract: "This is another development in our expansion of services".

"Mass transit is a big sector and it is vitally important that manufacturers have the ability to assess their products to meet client needs quickly and efficiently with help and advice available along the way.".
