OISD confirms exemplary thermal performance from the Schock Isokorb.

In August 2006, the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD), at Oxford Brookes University, carried out a series of tests on the thermal performance of steel beam junctions using different connection methods One of the methods involved the groundbreaking new thermal break module from Shock

The Isokorb KST, as the module is known, is designed to form a thermal break between steel cantilever structures and the internal steel structure - practically eliminating heat loss and the negative consequences of thermal bridging - while at the same time transferring load and maintaining full structural integrity of the building.

The KST units, designed specifically for steel-to-steel connections were used in the investigation.

The purpose was to determine the heat loss, minimum surface temperature and temperature factor (fRSI) and equivalent conductivity, resulting from use of the Schock KST units connecting a steel I-beam and to compare those values with alternative connection methods and with a continuous beam.

In the UK, the temperature factor (fRSI) is used to indicate condensation risk as described in BRE IP1/06, a document cited in Building Regulations Approved Documents Part L1 and L2.

For dwellings, fRSI must be greater than, or equal, to 0.75 and for commercial buildings it must be greater than, or equal to, 0.5 - calculated using an internal surface resistance of 0.13m2K/W.

The results(1) showed that the two Isokorb units (KST 16 and KST 22), achieved an fRSI performance of 0.82 and 0.81 respectively, exceeding the values of BRE IP1/06 and therefore meeting the requirements of Building Regulations Approved Documents L1 and L2.

The results for continuous beams and beams separated by PTFE pads are marginal / failures for commercial buildings are definitely failures for dwellings.
