Slip-Resistant Stair Nosings
Slip-resistant stair-nosings are becoming increasingly more essential for contributing to safety both in healthcare and industrial tiling installations.
Figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that the health sector has one of the worst records of accidents from slips and falls And the National Health Service says those accidents account for over half the number of all litigation cases it faces, costing £15m a year

Slip-resistant stair-nosings are becoming increasingly more essential for contributing to safety both in healthcare and industrial tiling installations -- as health service and industrial managers try to cut back on the number of slip-related accidents.
The Schluter range of TREP stair-nosing profiles, manufactured from stainless steel, aluminium and PVC, are specifically designed to give effective slip resistance on the edge of stairs.
Schluter-Systems Technical Manager Ian Knifton says that in addition to being slip-resistant they have two other specific functions: a further contribution to safety through the high visibility of the non-slip tread, and protecting the front edge of each stair from damage.

Two special versions of Schluter-Systems' award-winning underfloor heating system have been developed for small extensions and conservatories.
"Using a stair-nosing profile with a contrasting colour to the tiles creates a highly visible accentuation to the edge of the step.
This is now needed to conform to the new Part M of the Building Regulations, which calls for a distinguishing stair nosing for visually-impaired people." Included in the range: * Schluter-TREP-SE, S and B, which have been approved for use where there is a risk of slipping (BIA test certificate, slip-resistance assessment group R 9).
This means they are also suitable for use in heavily-trafficked areas such as offices and public buildings.
They feature a tread insert consisting of a rigid PVC bottom section, with a soft PVC slip-resistant surface which can be replaced in case of damage or wear.
* Schluter-TREP-E is a stainless steel profile with a special non-slip tread that is specially designed to be integrated into stairs covered with tile or natural stone, as well as into a screed or surface coating with a minimum thickness of 2mm.
Because of its resistance to chemicals it is particularly well suited for applications where it will be exposed to acids, alkalis, oil, grease and solvents.
* Schluter-TREP-TL comes with an additional feature which is of particular benefit to hospitals and retirement homes -- a luminous inlay in the non-slip PVC surface glows for up to ten hours after exposure to light, meaning the stair edges become more visible at dusk or in darkness.

Simpson director Paul Valler: "The aluminium anchoring legs incorporate a replaceable non-slip thermo-plastic tread area in brown, which really stands out in contrast to the Altair tiles, creating a highly visible edge of each step, playing a major role in stair safety at the hospital.".
