Scape creates childrens garden for hospital
Scape Design Associates is donating time to help create an unique garden at The James Cook University Hospital's Cleveland Assessment Unit in Middlesbrough.
Combining a strict modern perspective with traditional planting, and situated on top of The Knightsbridge's underground car parking facility, Scape has employed state-of-the-art 'green roof' technology and introduced a palette of York stone, granite and limestone, contemporary water features and neo-traditional planting, creating a supremely modern haven.
"This has been a tremendously exciting project in which to have been involved," said Phil Jaffa, managing director, Scape Design.
"It's not every day that we have the opportunity to create a new landmark for London as well as winning a gold award".
Working in conjunction with Squire and Partners for private investor Hong Kong based Cheng family, the landscape boasts a central courtyard to the rear of the building with a dynamic, cuboid water-feature projecting through granite steps.
Black slate in the pool below provides a mirror effect, creating an impression of deep water.
York stone pathways and low, formal box hedges surround the whole.
Pyramidal oaks stand tall against the building's glass and limestone elevations, while the golden yellow branches of Irish yew sway against the garden's rear walls.
Scape's second water-feature, a minimalist, low-lying rectangular pool framed by ivy-clad embankments, manicured lawns and home to koi carp is enlivened by foaming jets.
Scape has also introduced two further vibrant cascading water features with gently flowing water over a wall of textured granite slabs at the building's elegant porte cochere.
Mosaic artist Shelagh Wakely whose previous commissions include the Princess Diana Memorial, has worked closely with Scape to introduce glass-coloured contours depicting the River Thames on the opposite walls.
The Knightsbridge at 199 Knightsbridge is a luxurious, contemporary development comprising 203 apartments, eight mews houses together with private health club and a swimming pool.
Homes range from GBP500,000 for a studio to GBP18 million for a prime penthouse.
