Online survey by Screwfix during April and May, 2007 has found that, apart from the start date of 1 July, 12% of facilities managers knew nothing about the impending Smoking Ban.

The results also showed that 22% of those surveyed had no plans in place and the levels of awareness of compulsory issues varied between 76% and 37% A staggering 96% also believed that the Ban only applied to premises to which the public has access and 70% felt that it only applied to vehicles which are used to transport the public

Simon O'Mahony, Head of Marketing at Screwfix explains, "We have worked very hard to introduce a range of high quality, low cost signs, bins and shelters that would satisfy the requirements of the new Ban".

"However, our market research had indicated that there might have been an awareness problem and the survey confirmed our fears".

"On compulsory issues, for instance, only 76% of those questioned knew that they would be required to install no smoking signs by all exits and entrances, whilst just 56% knew that they were required to install no smoking signs in vehicles used by more than one member of staff".

"Optional requirements, such as providing a smoking shelter or stubbing out trays were known by 15% and 19% respectively".

"Most frightening of all was that, for most aspects of the Smoking Ban, between a quarter and half of those responsible for implementing the changes around their sites had little idea of what was required".

He adds, "Of the provisions already made towards the Ban, the most common was the development of a no smoking policy and the communication of this to staff by 49% of respondents, whilst 39% had bought and installed no smoking signs".

"22% freely admitted to not having done anything and having no plans to do so, despite the fact that the survey was carried out just 9 weeks before the start date".

From 1 July, 2007* the whole of the UK will be banned from smoking in enclosed public spaces.

With fines of up to GBP2,500 for those in charge of premises who fail to stop people smoking, and on-the-spot fines of GBP200 if they have failed to display no-smoking signs (up to GBP1000 if the case goes to court), the Smoking Ban needs to be taken very seriously.

The good news is that compliance with the new regulations has been made easier and cheaper with the addition of high quality, low cost "No-Smoking" aids in the latest Screwfix catalogue (issue 87).

Featuring GBP10m of savings, including bulk deals, the catalogue boasts a massive range of nearly 15,000 building, refurbishment and maintenance items, ex stock.

It also boasts 1800 new products including "No Smoking" signs in the Safety and Workwear section and Cigarette Bins in the Cleaning pages.

Shelters can also be found in the Outdoor Buildings section and, together with the rest of the range, can also be viewed at screwfix.com.

Designed for use in England, Scotland and Wales, the "No Smoking" signs are shown alongside other messages such as "No Smoking Beyond This Point" and "No Smoking In This Building".

"No Smoking" symbols and self-adhesive vinyl labels are also available together with Cigarette Bins in an Antique Style Prestige Deluxe and modern Premium wall mounted designs.

A floor mounted Cigarette Bin is also featured together with Wansbeck All-Purpose Shelters for use in all weathers and an Open Shelter with Perch or Bike Rack.
