A time of change for construction as Scottish Building appoints new office bearers.

Scottish Building, the principal employers' federation for the construction industry in Scotland, held it's Annual General Meeting (AGM) last week in the Federation's Headquarters in Stenhousemuir The AGM was held first, followed by a lengthy and very lively debate on the Scottish Parliament, the Press and "how to lobby effectively to ensure that building matters"

The AGM was extremely well attended by the Federations' 17 Local Associations.

All Standing Committees of the Federation gave a report on their work over the past year and informed the audience of what to expect in the months ahead.

The formality of the election of Office Bearers of the Federation then followed.

Mr.George Fraser was duly elected as the new President for the term 2006-2007.

George is the Deputy Chairman of Tulloch.

George has been a member of the Federation's Management Committee for several years and his dedication and support of the Federation's work is invaluable.

On his appointment George emphasised the importance of change within the construction industry and challenged the membership to manage changes to result in greater success, corporate growth and stability.

He made reference to the volume of red tape that restricts the industry and the delays and inefficiencies that it can bring and committed to flag our industry's concerns constructively, but firmly.

He also alerted employers to the need to raise the profile of the Federation in terms of reminding Scotland, from its politicians to the people on the street, of the value of the built environment and one of Scotland's oldest and most successful industries, fundamental to the country's social and economic future.

As Scotland's voice of construction, Scottish Building require to be in the corridors of power at Holyrood making the contacts and pressing our case, to get across the message that we are fighting construction's corner and Scottish Building is the organisation to connect with.

Chief Executive of Scottish Building, Michael Levack commented, "George brings a wealth of experience of the Scottish construction market and I look forward to working closely with him and the other office bearers of Scottish Building, to continue the evolution of the Federation to meet the modern needs and demands of our expanding membership".

Continuing on George's theme of change, it is evident that Scottish Building is flagging up its commitment to change by electing its first female Vice President in Mrs.

Lynn Watt, Managing Director of John Smart and Son (Kirkcaldy) .

Lynn committed to representing the smaller companies within our industry and is dedicated to the Federation, having worked closely with Scottish Building for many years.

She spoke of her great personal pleasure in accepting the appointment and wishes to extend Scottish Building's record of achievement by making progress in matters affecting the SME companies in membership.

Mr.Billy Kirkwood of RobertRyan Homes Limited will take up the position of Junior Vice President and Mr.Bill Imlach of Stewart Milne Construction will take up the post of Junior Vice President Elect.

After lunch, the debate and discussion was kicked off by Stephen Young, Political Consultant and was followed by Jim Dow, Director of Lacuna Communications and the former business editor of the Scotsman.
