Scottish Building's hands-on challenge encourages youngsters to consider construction as a career

Over an action-packed two day period, in conjunction with CITB, Scottish Building, the principal employers' federation for the construction industry in Scotland, challenged children to not only think about what they wanted to be when they grow up, but have a first hand go at trying out the construction industry now Between 5-6 October, approximately 125 S3 pupils from the Larbert High School were invited to meet the challenge of translating a design for a building into a reality at Scottish Building headquarters in Stenhousemuir

With team names including Bankrupt, Smarty Pants, Hard Hats, Baraca Building Company and Bob and the Builders, competition ran high.

Working in teams of 5/6, pupils worked in 6 dynamic sessions of 25.

Besides proving to by highly enjoyable, the simulation exercise gave pupils realistic, direct experience regarding construction and highlighted it as a highly challenging but creative and rewarding industry to be involved with.

Not unlike the real work environment, children were required to use their teamwork skills, organise, plan and co-operate with one another in order to successfully interpret and recreate the architect's design.

"Considering the significance of the construction industry in Scotland, which contributes a significant percentage to the Scottish economy, such exercises are invaluable and allow kids to learn about the sector in a practical manner, rather than merely from text book- hopefully making it an enhanced, appealing learning experience".

"After all, these children are the future of our industry," said Lynsey Anderson, Marketing Manager for Scottish Building.

Coinciding with National Construction Week (NCW), the UK-wide not-for-profit campaign which gives young people the chance to experience the wide range of opportunities available in the industry, the challenge proved to be a great success and introduced another career option to quite possibly the next generation of the trade.
