Scottish Building Federation welcome opportunity to work in partnership with Government in developing any future house-building strategy,

The Scottish Government acknowledgement that in order to build the 'ambitious' target of 35,000 new homes each year by the middle of the next decade will require the system to work more efficiently The need for a strategic approach to house-building led by the Government is vital, improving standards, addressing skills shortages, reducing planning delays and leading efforts towards zero carbon construction

But we have a real concern about the readiness of Scotland to currently realise this vision in a number of areas.

As well as the delivery of a pro-development agenda and the well-publicised skills gap, there is a need to address the glaring skills shortage that exists in local authority planning departments.

Delays are also exacerbated by the failure of utility companies to provide essential services to construction sites, and this is one of the biggest barriers to improved productivity in the sector, costing the Scottish economy millions of pounds each year.

A summit between key stakeholders, the construction sector and utility sectors would act as a catalyst to finding practical solutions to these problems.

The Scottish Building Federation welcome the opportunity to work in partnership with the Government in developing any future house-building strategy, giving thousands of people access to a decent home in a sustainable community.
