Laing Homes South West Thames' Priory Gate Mews development at Reigate is one of the first major housing schemes in Surrey to use Sandtoft's 20/20 interlocking clay plain tile The developer chose a mixture of 20/20 clay tiles, Balmoral Clayslate and Goxhill handmade plain tiles for this gated development of ten luxury 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and thirteen 3 and 4 bedroom terraced, semi-detached and detached homes

The use of a range of Sandtoft roofing products provides a good natural contrast between the different house types on site.

Balmoral Clayslate was chosen for the apartment buildings at the front which create a gateway to the terraced houses facing each other in the middle.

The remaining homes towards the rear of the site feature the 20/20 in Tuscan and the Goxhill in Light Red.

Jeremy Smith, Laing Homes South West Thames' in-house architect, comments, "We were keen to keep the roofing materials as natural as possible to meet planning requirements".

"It is the first time we have used the 20/20 interlocking clay plain tile and it has proved a good, cost effective alternative to clay plain tiles".

"We also liked the Balmoral Clayslate because it is natural and interlocking so it performs well and complements the look of the 20/20".

"It also fits in with the local vernacular, particularly the adjoining villas on Reigate Hill which use natural slate." The roofing tile installation was carried out by M J Daines for Laing Homes and, as the contractor was fixing Sandtoft's 20/20 for the first time, the company provided on site training to ensure the products benefits of reduced installation times could be achieved.

Mr Smith continues, "Not having used Sandtoft's 20/20 tile before, we are very happy with the end result".

"The choice of products used has also met with the approval of the local planning authority".

The 20/20 interlocking clay plain tile is the first product of its kind to make clay more cost effective than concrete when installed on the roof.

Requiring only 20 tiles per square metre rather than 60 traditional plain tiles due to its interlocking design, the 20/20 is of particular benefit to housebuilders because it offers a 30% reduction in installation times.

Equally, its innovative design means the system requires 63% fewer battens, is 42% lighter than concrete plain tiles and 30% lighter than clay plain tiles.

The Balmoral Clayslate is particularly ideal for situations where natural slate is preferred but cannot be used for budgetary reasons.

As a natural clay product, it provides a sustainable alternative to concrete slate look-a-likes.

More cost effective than traditional slate, the Balmoral features a riven surface and dressed edges giving it an authentic slate appearance.

Because it is interlocking, it will also perform down to pitches as low as 22.5o Goxhill is one of the most distinctive traditional roof coverings available, providing a rich and textured roofscape that becomes more attractive with age.

Each tile is unique, combining to create a roof of individual character.

Favoured for use on traditional homes, the Goxhill plain tile is cross-cambered and especially ideal for vertical cladding.
