Sandtofts 20/20 tiles a catalyst for change
Regeneration scheme by housing group Catalyst to demolish 1950s built terraces and replace with 600 new dwellings, is being roofed using Sandtoft's 20/20 Interlocking Clay Plain Tile.
Designed by Sandtoft to be fundamentally easier, faster and cheaper to install, 20/20 was originally conceived as a cost effective natural alternative to traditional plain tiles.
The new 20/20 still provides all the benefits of natural clay with the savings associated with single lap interlocking tile design.
The recent redesign of the tile centres around the introduction of a unique 'open gauge' design - a ground-breaking innovation which Sandtoft says makes interlocking clay tiles as easy to install as concrete.
Dennis Mole of Apex Roofing explains their choice of the new 20/20 roof tile, "The client wanted natural slate on the roof and had used it in the past but couldn't afford it on this particular job".
"So we turned to natural clay and Sandtoft through our long association with the company".
""We needed a high quality product that would fulfil the client's brief and enable us to finish the build on time.
The 20/20 was nice looking and gave an authentic slate feel - in fact, the Antique Slate colour and the clean lines of the tile created a nice flow with the leadwork on the roof".
"The open gauge design of the new 20/20 meant it was much quicker to set out compared with the original model and we only had to cut around the dormer windows so it was very time and labour efficient".
"Overall it was cheaper than slate and represented good value for money".
Building on the success of the original 20/20, the new 20/20 (along with Neo Pantile and large format Olympus and Cassius) is part of the family of New Generation clay tiles from Sandtoft which is designed to make natural materials more affordable.
