Sandtoft has been chosen to act as key supplier to a major local authority project.

Choosing roofing materials has always presented a specific challenge for the local authority specifier On the one hand there is a need to make best use of tax-payers' money and maximise budgets

On the other there is a desire to achieve this cost efficiency without sacrificing either quality standards or aesthetics.

Leading independent roof tile manufacturer Sandtoft Roof Tiles has long offered a range of products that effectively address this double- edged challenge.

As a result, it has once again been chosen to act as a key supplier to a major local authority project.

The project in question was a re-roofing scheme conducted by Hull City Council.

The scheme - which was managed by the Council's Housing Investment team - was initiated following an evaluation of the authority's housing stock as part of the Council's aim to bring all its residential properties in-line with the targets set out by the Decent Homes initiative before 2011.

Rob Clubley, from Hull City Council's Housing Investment team, explains: "Hull City Council is a progressive authority with a progressive approach to its housing stock".

"Having commissioned this scheme to help drive standards across our properties, it soon became apparent that from a roofing perspective, Sandtoft's tiles ticked all the right boxes".

"They offered us the right quality, the right aesthetics and the right level of value".

Sandtoft supplied tiles to re-roofing schemes in a number of areas across the City, one of particular note was Bilsdale Grove where Sandtoft supplied its innovative 20/20 tile to replace clay plain tiles that were reaching the end of their effective life.

Also made from clay, 20/20 was the perfect choice for this project thanks to its extremely cost effective nature.

Because 20/20 employs an interlocking design, the tile provides coverage of 20 tiles per square metre - instead of the usual 60 required by traditional plain tiles.

This also means 60% fewer battens are needed and together these factors delivered significant savings in material costs.

On top of these material savings, 20/20 can reduce roof completion times by up to 30 % because of its 'open gauge' design.

Unique to Sandtoft, the 'open gauge' design removes all the setting out restrictions usually imposed by complicated interlocking bars and instead, gives the roofer complete freedom in setting the gauge.

Such freedom means faster setting-out on the roof initially, and not only that, it also eliminates the need for cuts at either the eaves or the ridge thereby offering significant reductions in roof completion times and associated costs.

As Rob Clubley points out, "Aside from its ease of use and cost effective nature, another key factor in our decision to use 20/20 was the fact that it's a clay tile".

"This allowed us to use a natural material, which is important from an environmental point of view".

"It also means the tiles offer superb aesthetics and will weather naturally".

With ageing natural slates the Preston Road area of the City called for a different solution and initially, the Housing Investment team had considered using fibre cement products for this project.

Since these would be lighter in weight than the slates, concerns were raised as to whether additional roof bracing would be required.

The expense of such work would quickly negate any potential cost savings offered by fibre cement.

Upon further investigation, Sandtoft's large format, thin leading edge clay tile, Cassius, emerged as a far better choice.

Not only were these tiles the same weight as the natural slates to be replaced, but their Antique Slate colour offered a completely natural alternative to the original slate.

This allowed the Council to restore the roofs to their original beauty by using local, natural materials which is a key requirement, expected by Hull City Council of all its maintenance supply partners.

Using Cassius even allowed the Council to save money.

Thanks to its large format nature (which gives coverage of 10.5 tiles per square metre), interlocking design and easy-to-lay open gauge, Cassius looks like slate - yet delivers the fixing efficiency of concrete.

With the savings made in installation costs, the Council went on to re-roof additional houses beyond those it had originally budgeted for.

Following the completion of the projects, feedback suggests that all the Sandtoft tiles specified have been well received.

Residents are pleased with the look of their new roofs and that disruption during each installation was kept to a minimum.

Most of the work was actually carried out in the winter - something made possible by Sandtoft's dry fix systems which enabled the work to continue in all weathers.

Meanwhile, the Council is delighted that the properties involved now benefit from superior roofs, that significant savings were achieved and that its contracted roofers - Skeer Roofing - reported no problems in using any of the tiles, even though it was their first experience of both Cassius and 20/20.

In fact, speaking of the Sandtoft products, Alan Skeer from Skeer Roofing said: "Using Sandtoft tiles couldn't have been easier".

"Thanks to features like the open gauge, Cassius' large format and 20/20's single lap design, we were able to the complete roofs quickly, efficiently and with the minimum amount of disruption for tenants".

Also commenting on the re-roofing projects, Nick Oldridge, Sales and Marketing Director for Sandtoft said: "Hull City Council has used two of Sandtoft's most innovative tiles to overcome the very problems for which they were designed".

"Both tiles have provided a practical and economic solution for the re-roof projects whilst at the same time enabling the use of natural materials.".
