Seddon recycling scheme wins prestigious award

A Seddon Group product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Dec 10, 2007

Unique joint venture aimed at boosting the recycling of construction waste has been presented with a 'Highly Commended' Award in the Housebuilding Innovation 2007 Awards.

Leading social housing providers, The Riverside Group and PLUS Housing Group joined forces with the Seddon Group to create in 2006 to create Circle Liverpool.

CIRCLE stands for "Construction Industry Recycling Centre for the Local Environment." It provides an alternative, cost effective and environmentally-friendly solution to the disposal of construction waste and will create 20 new jobs in Liverpool.

In just five months CIRCLE diverted more than 1,250 tonnes of waste from landfill and achieved a recycling rate of over 80%.

It is now expanding into the wider Merseyside area and aims to process 20, 000 tonnes of construction waste next year.

The Housebuilding Innovation Awards are devised by Housebuilder and the Home Builders Federation and aim to recognise companies which are demonstrating a commitment to innovation in the housebuilding industry.

They are supported by the Government, which views them as an aid to raising standards.

The judges were impressed with CIRCLE's impact in just five months of existence.

They believed the partnership illustrates how developers and housing associations can make a real difference to an area by pooling their resources, and also thought that CIRCLE was an innovative solution to a pressing industry issue.

Rod Sellers, Chairman of Seddon Group and CIRCLE, comments: "Sustainable Construction is of significant importance to the partners in this venture and we all put immense effort into preserving the world's natural resources.

At Seddon we operate a strict three R's policy - reduce, recycle and reuse and the CIRCLE business is fantastic as it has allowed us to prove the viability of the operation, which we now plan to roll out to other conurbations across the UK.
