J and S Seddon takes on pier maintenance

A Seddon Group product story

J and S Seddon has been commissioned by Sefton council to repair and paint the Grade II listed Southport Pier as part of its regular maintenance regime.

Work had to be carried out during the winter season to minimise disruption to the tourist trade, although the pier remained open throughout the contract period.

Andy Woodhouse, north west regional manager for J and S Seddon (Painting), said: 'The job was challenging as the pier is a mile long and workers were exposed to all kinds of weather, including high winds and sub-zero temperatures.

'We also had to allow public access to the pier during the work.

'It was a major contract involving repairs and painting to all parts of the surface of the pier, including handrails, shelters, timber kickboards, lighting columns and stairwells.

'A tram continued to run up and down the pier while much of the work was carried out, with the exception of a three-week period where we needed to access lighting columns above the tram line.

He added: 'Environmental considerations were also very important during the contract as we had to ensure that no waste entered the sand, sea or river below the pier.

The contract was carried-out by workers from J and S Seddon's Liverpool office.
