Steven Timms, Minister of Energy, recently visited the University of Newcastle's new Devonshire Building where SES is installing full Mechanical and Electrical building services to the value of £3.5m.
The £12m Environmental and E-Science centre is a flagship development for the University, which has adopted the highest standards of environmental and sustainable design Through this approach the building is the first University laboratory in the country to achieve the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) 'Excellent' rating, which is regarded by the UK construction sector as the 'gold standard' for environmental design and management

The building also scored the highest marks for a bespoke assessment by the BRE.
SES contributed numerous innovate ideas to be used on the M and E aspect of the project whilst involved in the initial design stages.
These include the use of Aquatherm pipework, which offers recyclable options at the end of the buildings life; collection of rainwater from the large roof area, which is stored in a 20,000 litre underground tank - this then provides flushing water for the sanitary systems; geometric cooling and a PIR/Daylight Sensing Light system.
Steven Timms whilst there took time to inspect the Photovoltaic installation, that SES was managing on the project, and said he was particularly pleased to have the opportunity to do so as the Devonshire Building was the first major project benefiting from Photovoltaic panels to be completed during his term as Minister of Energy.
The panel system at peak times can contribute approximately five percent of the total building electrical consumption.
Steve Joyce, SES Projects Manager, said: "The Devonshire Building is a great example of what can be realised when all the parties involved work cohesively to deliver not only a superb building, but one that is environmentally sustainable through its life-cycle.
It certainly will be a benchmark for the whole of the industry to look at now and in the future." HBG is the Principal Contractor at the project, which is due for completion in February 2004.
