SES has implemented a number of health and safety initiatives throughout the year, including the production of regional safety bulletins and safety awareness campaigns, in addition to achieving the OHSAS 18001:1999 accreditation from the BSI.
A contributing factor to this result has been the extensive use of modularisation at a number of SES projects including the Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital in Brighton, Bridgewater Place in Leeds and the Darlington Education Village.
In addition to commercial issues, there are a number of safety advantages related to the use of modularised systems.
For starters, modules are lifted using specialist lifting equipment and installed from mobile elevating work platforms, alleviating the need for extended periods working from mobile scaffold towers or other access equipment.
Housekeeping and storage are improved due to the modules taking up less space on the ground, and the ease with which they can be stored in a designated area reduces the likelihood of damage or hazard to site personnel.
The modules can then be manoeuvred mechanically, rather than large equipment being manually lifted.
In addition to a reduction in safety risks, there are also environmental benefits as the units are prefabricated offsite, resulting in far less waste material and packaging generated within the site area.
