Sureset resin bound surfacing brings colour to Cardiff's 'The Age of Coal'

Those approaching Cardiff via the bay will clearly see the striking Red Dragon representation at the water's edge.

Created as part of the Cardiff Bay Barrage - The Age of Coal heritage project, the image is immediately recognisable as the Welsh emblem but its design also illustrates the geological strata of coal in the Welsh seams, as a reminder of their historic importance to the area.

The need for a range of colour finishes linked to durability led Harbour Authority Operations Manager, Roger Thorney, to specify the Sureset resin bound surfacing system to achieve the desired result.

For the dragon's construction 3mm bright Red recycled glass has created the main body with natural gravel for the surrounding areas.

The eyes use 3mm Black and elsewhere 4mm Green, 4mm Grey and 3mm Dark Terracotta bring together the final effect.

In normal circumstances Sureset can be laid colour to colour without any problem but with strong contrast between the principle colours it was important that all edging be totally accurate and here Sureset has incorporated a metal strip which helps enhance the over all appearance.

Coal bands have been laid colour to colour to provide subtler colour changes, as would have been in reality.
