SFS Intec Keeps Heathrow T5 Roof On
When planning the design and construction of the elegant wave roof on the new Heathrow Terminal 5 (T5) building, Hathaway Roofing turned to SFS intec for the essential fastening detail.
The fixings were used to secure the 13,000m2 KALZIP standing seam aluminium roofing section of the 120,000m2 manufacturing unit.
The twin skin walls system utilised 43,000m2 of Gasell external half-round slender sinusoidal panels fixed using irius austenitic stainless steel colour headed fasteners coated in Dark Metallic Silver and Zinc Grey.
Approximately 5,500m2 of Rannila Panels were fixed directly to the steel columns using SCF12-S19-6.3x235 screws.
These panels provide a 4-hour fire rated compartment wall inside the building and the fixings are crucial in ensuring its performance in the event of a fire.
Whilst the irius fastener is radically different to other products currently on the market, top cladding manufacturers have been quick to recognise its aesthetic, installation and performance benefits.
These include its patented low-profile head, which can be lacquered to match the colour of the cladding panel, making it far less obtrusive than ordinary fixings.
A unique under-head drive means the fastener can be installed quickly and easily, without any site wastage.
Phil Gamble of Hathaway Roofing comments, "SFS intec fasteners were primarily selected because of its innovative range of quality austenitic stainless steel fixings.
This was a priority, as the fasteners need to have long-term durability due to the nature of the facility.
SFS intec's service and technical support were also a deciding factor for the project.".
