A new RIBA approved CPD presentation from SFS intec examines some leading issues in roofing and cladding techniques.

A new RIBA approved CPD presentation from SFS intec examines some leading issues in roofing and cladding techniques, and demonstrates the key difference that the choice of correct fastening and sealing systems can make.

In addition, it emphasises the need to ensure these are written into the specification so that a building's performance in meeting Part L, and its medium and long term integrity, are not compromised by price decisions made down the supply and build chain.

Three case studies are used to introduce the design issues in developing specific fastening solutions for standing seams, thermal bridging in single ply membrane roofing and pre-engineered fastening systems for economical fastening of membrane roofing.

The next issue introduced is that of durability of fastening systems, where the advantages of austenitic stainless steel fasteners, with a 30 year warranty and recommended by BS 5427:1996, are compared to coated carbon steel fasteners with up to10 year warranties, depending on application.

The importance of correct weather sealing designs, the relatively new requirement to improve air sealing and how it can be achieved, and the value of lasting aesthetic appeal are also all discussed with practical, cost-effective solutions.
