Canopy structure over toll plaza with arches in Kalzip standing seam aluminium over halters fixed to the structural deck with SFS intec austenitic stainless steel fasteners.

The Tamar Bridge to the West of Plymouth on the A38 was the longest suspension bridge in Britain when it was completed in 1961 with 50,000 vehicles a day passing over it Tolls are collected only from those leaving Cornwall, and the Toll Booths at the Cornish end have been upgraded following the bridge's widening

A canopy structure has been erected over the toll plaza comprising a series of scallop sectioned arches in Kalzip standing seam aluminium over halters fixed to the structural deck with SFS intec austenitic stainless steel fasteners.

The climate can be very harsh on the Tamar Estuary, especially during winter and makes heavy demands on building materials, as Tony Marsh, MD of contractors Bowline Roofing and Netting .

explains: "There is quite an extreme marine climate here".

"Not only is there wind borne salt spray from the Atlantic, there is a very high wind lift factor to consider, as gales are funnelled up the estuary".

"That's one of the reasons that we always select SFS intec fasteners; although they are a small part of the project, fasteners play a primary role in maintaining the integrity of the building".

"With aluminium weather layer and structural deck, you couldn't compromise the integrity with poor quality carbon steel fastenings, for example".

The dramatically designed 8 metre high canopy structure provides greatly improved protection to motorists and staff at the toll booths, as well as housing new tolling equipment, lighting electrical equipment and signage.

The six scallop shaped section roofs (with two half roofs) are built from 500 sq,m.

Kalzip stucco finished aluminium over 90mm mineral wool insulation, and clipped to halters which are fixed to the aluminium structural deck with SFS SDK fasteners.

Client: Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee (Cornwall CC and Plymouth CC).

Main management contractor: Dean and Dyball.

Roofing contractor: Bowlines Roofing and Netting .
