SGB for Staveley Northern Loop concrete bridges
SGB Formwork equipment is helping contractors make rapid progress on the construction of several reinforced concrete bridges, forming part of the Staveley Northern Loop Road scheme in Derbyshire.
The concrete bridges form part of Phase 1 of the GBP10.9 million tender.
Following the use of SGB's lightweight GASS aluminium shoring system and DU-AL beams earlier in Phase 1, for the construction of a canal bridge in 2008, concrete specialist David Ashley Construction is now using MULTIFORM bridge parapet brackets and MKII Soldiers to provide formwork support on three further bridges.
"The systems specified by SGB Formwork are very economical compared with other available options, but they don't compromise on quality, strength or safety", comments Peter Feeney, Temporary Works Coordinator with main contractor Carillion.
"SGB was pro-active at the early stages of the design, before any sub-contractor commitment, and were happy to invest time in the detail design when local authority checks and on-site adjustments were undertaken".
At Eckington Road, SGB's MULTIFORM brackets are being used to facilitate the construction of the concrete parapets and edge projections on the new bridge, which will carry the existing Eckington Road over the railway, a new canal and the loop road itself.
The MULTIFORM bracket system is a robust modular design that utilises far fewer components than traditional under-slung formwork solutions without compromising on strength or versatility.
Very quick to install and strike, the MULTIFORM parapet bracket helps reduce cycle times and hence minimises costs.
And because it allows all work to be carried out by operatives on the concrete deck, it improves working conditions and enhances safe work at height.
The versatility of the system not only allows any size of parapet to be formed but also improves accuracy and ease of adjustment.
There is no need to use fiddly timber packing-pieces; instead the system is easily adjusted using the integral positioning jacks.
Elsewhere on the Staveley Northern Loop Road project, SGB Formwork's MKII Soldiers are being used as an overslung beam system to support the formwork for the new Northern Loop Bridge and Lowgates Bridge.
This configuration provides a cost-effective method of casting bridge decks and parapets.
The standard MKII Soldiers are lightweight steel beams that, with their ancillary attachments and connectors, can be assembled in a variety of configurations for support and propping applications.
MKII Soldiers are usually used as an underslung frame beneath the bridge to enable the concreting of the deck and parapets.
Suspended in this way, the frame is an ideal solution for suspending falsework over live roads, railways or waterways.
However, on this project, the equipment is being used as an overslung frame, a relatively rare configuration, which is used as an economical method for casting parapets after the central deck section has been poured.
