SGS Poland provides Contract Engineering during the construction of new power plants or for the modernisation of existing ones, acting as an independent advisor.
SGS SA has assisted in the construction of a wind farm located in Poland
SGS now offers investors Owner's Representative Services during wind farm development.
The range of services includes support during the pre-construction and the construction phases, from verification of the initial design plans to the supervision of a trial run and commissioning.
SGS has supported RWE in establishing its first wind farm in Poland.
The wind farm is located in Suwalki, North East Poland.
It consists of 18 type SWT-2.3-93 wind turbines each with a capacity of 2.3MW, supplied by Siemens Wind Power.
The wind farm will generate 80,000 MWh annually.
Poor local road infrastructure required new roads to be built and existing roads to be modernised.
Suwalki is situated in the coldest part of Poland, where a long winter, December to April, results in a tight time schedule.
The foundations for all 18 wind turbines needed to be ready before the onset of winter as such construction work is impossible to carry out at low temperatures.
The final wind turbine foundation was completed by early December, the first turbine components were delivered in March and assembly commenced in April.
SGS made an on-site office, appointed engineers to supervise the construction, and the project was managed from the SGS office in Warsaw.
The SGS team consisted of a site manager, two civil engineers, a road expert, an electrical engineer, a Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) expert and a safety officer.
SGS Inspectors worked in collaboration with the RWE Innogy project management.
SGS was asked to provide additional inspection of the wind turbine components.
This included the QA inspection of nacelles, towers, hubs and blades at the manufacturers' workshops in Denmark.
