Richard Hipkiss, Marketing Manager Schneider Electric, says investment in new equipment to improve efficiency will be unavoidable under Part L.

You can't blame the Government for everything open letter to the editor It is encouraging to hear a call from Government for action on reducing the emissions from energy generation by improving the energy efficiency of our buildings

Although, it is unfair to say that such action should come solely from the Government.

For instance, the recent amendments to Part L of the Building Regulations have brought these issues to the foreground.

Perhaps, the changes have not been communicated as clearly as one would hope.

However, fundamental and sensible legislation to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency in both domestic and commercial buildings is in place.

We should not wait to be spoon-fed.

If any action is to be taken, it should come from the business community itself.

It is vital that everyone - both current building owners and those that steer our future buildings - devotes time and effort to understand these regulations.

If they do, it will soon become clear that the investment in new equipment to improve efficiency will be unavoidable under Part L.

In many situations, new technology, such as intelligent energy metering and lighting and heating controls, will be the only option.
