Sika concrete coatings and car park decking systems have been used exclusively in the recent refurbishment of Leopold Street multi-storey car park in Ramsgate.

The requirement was to arrest and prevent future deterioration of the concrete structure, whilst producing a lighter and safer environment for car park users Together with the improvement in the CCTV system, lighting and parking bay markings, Thanet District Council are hoping to receive the Secured Car Park Award

Main contractors, Makers UK Ltd.

repaired any defective concrete areas using the Sika MonoTop concrete repair system.

A defective column was repaired and strengthened with the carbon fibre based SikaWrap structural strengthening system.

Following thorough preparation, the intermediate decks were coated with Sikafloor 261, a durable, solvent free, epoxy based, intermediate waterproof decking system.

The top deck was prepared and coated with Sikafloor 350 Elastic, an elastomeric, polyurethane, waterproof membrane decking system.

The system was selected following independent testing which showed compliance with the present German standard for the performance of car park decking systems.

This standard is the most stringent requirement available in the world for car park systems.

It takes into account such characteristics as waterproofing, durability and chemical resistance.

Sika Limited was able to offer Thanet Council a proven, single source solution for the upgrading of Leopold Street car park.

Following the completion of this five month project, Thanet Councils Property Manager Mike Newton said: "This work should help to make Leopold Street car park more user friendly.

Upgrading the lighting and CCTV systems will help to make people feel safer when they are using it, and the addition of help points at the new ticket machines will enable people to summon help in case of emergency.

The improvements should also help to considerably extend the lifetime of the car park.".
