Sika FerroGard 903 corrosion inhibitor is being used exclusively to preserve the vaulted galleries of the battlements around the North Gate, part of the £1.3 million conservation project currently taking place at Cardiff Castle With history dating back to the Roman occupation in the first century AD, the castle is one of Wales1 major tourist attractions

To ensure the integrity of the project, extensive research and analysis was carried out before embarking on the project.

The entire project, which will be completed over five years, is valued at nearly ?8 million, and is being funded and managed by Cardiff Council, with financial assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Cadw.

The Neo Roman Fort was built between 1890 and 1925 following the discovery of the original Roman fort in 1899 and is highly regarded as a unique interpretation of Roman architecture and antiquity.

The vaulted galleries to the battlements are believed to be one of the first examples of reinforced concrete cast on site.

Exposure to the elements over such a long period has led to parts of the concrete showing signs of decay.

To preserve the galleries, structural engineers Mann Williams specified Sika FerroGard 903 corrosion inhibitor.

FerroGard 903 penetrates the concrete to form a thick protective film around the reinforcing steel.

This arrests the corrosion rate of affected steel, and provides corrosion protection to the undamaged reinforced concrete.

The contractors on the project were CRR of Cardiff.

Sika FerroGard is highly cost-effective, water based and has no effect on other concrete properties.

It gives long-term protection and durability, and can be applied where other methods of protection are not viable.

It can be over-coated as part of a comprehensive concrete protection system.

Cardiff Council has embarked upon a major programme of conservation at Cardiff castle, which will see the entire fabric and foundation of the castle restored, conserved and enhanced over the next five years.

Work commenced in August 2001 and is expected to be completed in 2008.
