Light Work For Sika In Birmingham

A Sika product story

A range of 8, 10 and 12 metre lighting columns have been protected with Sika coatings in the infrastructure re-development of Masshouse Circus, part of the Queensway ring road in Birmingham.

The recently completed, 12 million pound design and build project by Birse Construction Ltd, now known as Birse Civils Limited for Birmingham City Council, involved the demolition of the 1960's elevated gyratory system.

This has been replaced by a ground level road network, which will improve access to the City centre, be aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly, with emphasis on pedestrian safety and comfort.

This has been achieved with the use of high quality paving and brickwork, and the introduction of attractive architectural lighting.

The lighting columns were supplied by CU Phosco Lighting, having been shop painted using Sika Icosit EG1 Rapid, an MIO fast curing, epoxy coating, designed for direct application onto galvanized steel.

Once the columns were erected on site, one coat of Sika Icosit 6630 was applied by specialist column painters Hanrahan and Sons, to a depth of 100 microns.

Icosit 6630 is a one-pack polyurethane alkyd finishing coat, with excellent colour retention and weathering properties and will ensure good corrosion protection.

With traffic management a priority, the Sika one coat system was the preferred choice over conventional multi-coat systems.

This new development at Masshouse Circus will open up access from the Eastside to the City centre and encourage future development of the area.

The combined shop and site applications of the Sika coating system to the lighting columns will provide life to first maintenance of 15 years.
