A Step Up With Sika
Sika concrete repair mortars and coatings have recently been used to repair the pre-fabricated treads and walkways of a fire escape staircase at the BT exchange in Stourbridge.
Originally constructed with no proper protection apart from standard masonry paint, the walkways and treads had suffered from ingress of water and salts, and areas of spalled concrete had become evident The solution was to remove and repair the areas of damaged concrete, and coat with a hardwearing, balcony coating system, with a non-slip finish to improve the safety for users of the stairway

Sika's Icoment 520 levelling mortar and SikaGard 550W, an elastic, anti carbonation, protective, decorative coating, are being used in the construction of Spinnaker Tower at Portsmouth Harbour.

Contractors IRL Group, from Loughborough, removed all defective concrete and made good using the Sika MonoTop concrete repair system, an easy to use, one component concrete repair mortar.
To stabilise the structure and protect against further deterioration, Sika FerroGard 903 corrosion inhibitor was applied.
FerroGard 903 penetrates the concrete and forms a protective barrier around the reinforcement steel.
This application not only significantly increases the life of the stairway, but also reduces the number of repairs that need to be completed.
To produce a durable non-slip finish to the walkways and treads, Sikafloor 400N Elastic was applied.
This coloured, one component polyurethane coating is designed specifically for walkways and similar applications.
It is highly elastic, chemical and slip resistant, extremely hard wearing, and resistant to UV and weather.
All other surfaces were coated with SikaGard 550W Elastic, a crack-bridging, anti-carbonation protective concrete coating.
Sika systems, with their proven track record, have ensured the long-term integrity of the fire escape.
It is now aesthetically pleasing, durable and safer to use.
