Sika car park systems refurbishment of Queen Anne municipal car park in Cambridge will make it brighter and safer, aesthetically pleasing and much more 'family friendly'.

Sika car park systems are being used for the refurbishment of Queen Anne municipal car park in Cambridge.

This multi-story car park was quite dark and uninviting, and the intermediate decks were suffering badly from damage caused by road salts (chlorides) brought in on vehicles.

Cambridge City Council, in conjunction with consulting engineers Peter Dann, produced a specification to repair and coat the car park, which along with the installation of new lighting, would make it much brighter and safer.

Specialist contractors, CRL, were appointed to complete the works.

The decks had suffered the main chloride damage, and SikaTop 77 admixture was added to the repair mix to produce a pourable micro-concrete.

SikaTop 77 is a water-based, polymer admixture, producing a durable repair that is resistant to shrinkage and cracking, has good mechanical properties, and can handle freeze-thaw conditions.

Patch repairs are being carried out using Sika MonoTop, an easy to use, one component concrete repair system, and expansion joints replaced with Sikaflex-PRO 3WF, a one part, chemically resistant polyurethane construction sealant.

To stabilise the concrete structure and protect against further deterioration caused by the chlorides, Sika FerroGard 903 corrosion inhibitor is being applied.

FerroGard 903 penetrates the concrete and forms a protective barrier around the reinforcement steel.

This application not only significantly increases the life of the structure, but also reduces the number of repairs that need to be completed.

The decks and ramp areas are coated with the Sika intermediate deck surfacing system, Sikafloor 261, to give a slip resistant, hardwearing surface.

This epoxy based, solvent free flooring system, is durable, waterproof, chemically resistant, and fast and easy to apply.

Due for completion towards the end of this year, this upgrade will leave Queen Anne MSCP brighter and safer, aesthetically pleasing and much more 'family friendly'.
