Concrete Repair Systems Refurbish Tower Blocks

A Sika product story

Sika concrete repair systems have been used to refurbish 45 year old tower blocks in the London Borough of Islington.

The Stafford Cripps estate in the London Borough of Islington is currently being refurbished using concrete repair systems and coatings from Sika Limited.

The estate consists of three, 36 metre high, 12 storey tower blocks, Cotswold, Parmoor and Sapperton Courts, which date back to 1959.

This was one of the first Local Authority high rise building projects in Britain.

Nearly 50 years of wear and tear caused by exposure to the elements have lead to spalling concrete and failed joints from carbonation and chloride attack.

The BBA approved Sika Icoment concrete repair system was chosen to refurbish the blocks, and Gunite (Eastern) Ltd were appointed sub-contractors to carry out the work.

SikaGard 550W decorative, protective coating was selected for its long term durability and track-record in excess of 20 years, and Sika FerroGard 903 corrosion inhibitor was applied to arrest the progress of the steel corrosion.

FerroGard 903 penetrates the concrete to form a protective film around the reinforcement steel surface, arresting the development of expansive corrosion.

This not only stabilises and increases the life of the structure, but also minimises the amount of concrete that needs to be removed.

Movement joints were replaced with Sikaflex Pro2HP, a high performance, permanently elastic polyurethane construction sealant.

Mitchell McFarlane and Partners were structural Engineers on the project, and Eugena Ltd were the main Contractor.
