Stirling stuff again from Sika

The prestigious 2004 RIBA Stirling prize was awarded to Sika Limited for the second year running,for its role in the structural bonding and waterproofing of the now famous Swiss Re Building in London.

The prestigious 2004 RIBA Stirling prize was awarded to Sika Limited for the second year running,for its role in the structural bonding and waterproofing of the now famous Swiss Re Building, known as The Gherkin at St Mary Axe in the City of London.

Structural bonding of the numerous glass panels, forming a spectacular spiralling façade was achieved using Sikaflex552, a primerless assembly adhesive based upon a high performance polyurethane hybrid.

This Sika product secured the double glazed units within their frames and provides resistance against wind pressure, building movement as well as protection against weathering and ageing.

The innovative design of the external structural glazing required a resilient and durable sealant.

Elastosil SG 500 and Elastosil Weathering, 2 of Sikas range of silicone sealants were specified to provide adhesion and effective waterproofing to the external façade.

In addition Sika Membran, a synthetic waterproofing membrane, was used in areas between the glazed curtain walling and structural components.

The system satisfies the air tight current requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations and has the benefits of excellent workability, even coverage in corners,usage on uneven surfaces, primeless bonding by gun applied adhesive, the need for no mechanical fasteners and longevity.

Sikas success in the RIBA Stirling Prize again is based upon its world leading sealants and waterproofing technology and solutions which are illustrated in 3 newly published brochures for Trocal roofing systems, Elastosil and Sika Membran.

With such advanced technology Sika are such to feature on the shortlist for next year's award.
