Car park refurbished using Sika Repair Systems

Mayorhold Multi-Storey car park situated in the centre of Northampton, with spaces for 880 cars, has recently been refurbished using Sika concrete repair and coating systems.

Testing of this five level car park, which was built in 1973, had shown increasing deterioration of the reinforced concrete decks, due to chloride attack of the reinforcing steel within the structure.

The refurbishment work was carried out by specialist contractors Makers UK , for Mears Facility Management, term maintenance contractors for Northampton Borough Council.

Due to differing extents of corrosion activity within the steel reinforcement, a variety of corrosion control methods were employed.

To ensure the future integrity of the car park decks, a ribbon anode Cathodic Protection system was installed to completely stop steel corrosion in critical areas.

Sika FerroGard 903 corrosion inhibitor was applied locally, to reduce steel corrosion and add protection to the reinforcing steel in other areas.

The combination of these corrosion control methods provide a cost efficient, technically driven solution.

A remote monitoring on a virtual private network was installed to allow the client to have a full picture of the structural condition of the car park and potentially predict any future need for maintenance several years in advance, to assist with phasing and budgeting of such works.

Following repairs and preparation, Sikafloor 350 solvent free, elastic polyurethane decking system was applied to the top deck.

This was over-coated with Sikafloor 359, a flexible epoxy seal coat, which gives a tough, waterproof flexible surface to the deck, with good colour stability and resistance to weathering.

The Sikafloor top deck system is approved in accordance with the German Rili-DAfStb Standard, which consists of 8 different tests such as, chemical, abrasion, slip resistance and crack-bridging properties.

Each individual test already has an EN number, which will be part of the European Standard.

The intermediate decks were coated with Sikafloor 261, a durable, solvent free epoxy resin intermediate decking system.

Repairs to all decks were carried out using Sika Rapid repair mortar, a cementitious, fast setting mortar with high early strength.

The Sika car park decking systems are available in a range of colours, allowing the client to select a suitable colour scheme and demark different areas within the car park.

Soffits and pillars were repaired using the Sika MonoTop concrete repair system, and Sika FerroGard 903 corrosion inhibitor was applied.

SikaColor 671W, an anti-carbonation decorative coating was applied to all surfaces.

This environmentally friendly, water based, protective coating prevents water ingress, is vapour permeable and extremely durable.

The refurbishment works, together with the new upgraded lighting system, has made Mayorhold car park brighter and safer, with an assured future.
