Specialist car park decking systems from Sika have recently been used in the refurbishment of Lurke St Multi-Storey car park in Bedford.

The reinforced concrete car park, which has space for 850 cars was built in 1966 using lift slab construction.

Despite regular maintainace, it was beginning to show its age, with the common problem of chloride attack on the reinforcing steel within the deck slabs.

Bedford Borough Council in partnership with specialist contractors Makers UK ., embarked upon a total refurbishment of the car park.

These works included concrete reapairs, application of corrosion inhibitor to the decks and anti-carbonation coatings to all exposed concrete surfaces.

The upper deck was coated with Sikafloor 350 Elastic, a two part solvent free, elastomeric polyurethane based decking system, that has excellent crack bridging characteristics.

It is chemical resistant, weather and UV resistant, durable and economic.

The Sikafloor top deck system is approved in accordance with the German Rili-DAfStb Standard, which consists of 8 different tests such as, chemical, abrasion, slip resistance and crack-bridging properties.

Each individual test already has an EN number which will be part of the European Standard.

The intermediate decks were coated with Sikafloor 261, a durable, solvent free epoxy intermediate decking system.

Sika decking systems are available in a range of colours to suit a variety of colour schemes, and demark different areas within the car park.

A complete upgrade of the lighting system, installation of a new pay on foot system and dedicated parking office together with the refurbishment works, has enabled the car park to receive 'Secure Car Park' accreditation.
