Sika A Towering Success In Portsmouth
Sika's Icoment 520 levelling mortar and SikaGard 550W, an elastic, anti carbonation, protective, decorative coating, are being used in the construction of Spinnaker Tower at Portsmouth Harbour.
The solution devised by the new owners of the site, UK and European Investments, and their architects EPR Architects was to demolish the original building down to the first floor, and rebuild using a steel frame structure.
Willmott Dixon were appointed main contractors.
A critical aspect of the new design was the aesthetic appearance of the finished structure.
After rejecting other alternatives, unpolished ceramic granite slabs in a buff colour were chosen, a less costly solution than natural stone, but giving a similar appearance.
SikaTack Panel System was chosen to secretly fix the 20,000 panels, which measured 600 x 300 x 10mm thick onto an aluminium carrier rail system, and specialist contractor Baris UK were chosen to complete the work.
The SikaTack Panel system is an elastic adhesive system incorporating a one part, gun applied polyurethane structural adhesive for permanent bonding of ceramic and plastic cladding panels onto aluminium or timber sub-structures.
This cost effective system was chosen as it reduces the need for extra mechanical fixings, remains permanently elastic, is non-corrosive and capable of withstanding high dynamic stresses.
Following quality assured testing by Taylor Woodrow, SikaBond T54, a high performance, solvent free elastic adhesive was applied to the backs of the ceramic slabs to prevent them shattering under impact loads.
On completion Red Central provides around 8,000 square feet of retail space and 60,000 square feet of office space, and considerably improves the visual appeal of Redhill town centre.
