Sika A Towering Success In Portsmouth
Sika's Icoment 520 levelling mortar and SikaGard 550W, an elastic, anti carbonation, protective, decorative coating, are being used in the construction of Spinnaker Tower at Portsmouth Harbour.
The three bridges, Hatch Mill Bridge, Bourne Place and Waydon Lane were built in the early 1970's, and over time had suffered deterioration due to the ingress of road salts and general exposure to the elements.
Sika concrete repair and structural strengthening systems were specified by Surrey County Council in the contract given to Ringway Highway Services, and specialist contractors Structural Renovations were appointed to carry out the work.
Following removal of defective concrete, all three bridges were repaired using the Sika MonoTop concrete repair system.
The cementitious MonoTop pre-bagged system is easy to mix and apply, has high build characteristics and has an excellent bond to concrete.
To ensure the extra strength required to enable Hatch Mill Bridge to conform to the new 40T.
weight limit, Sika CarboDur structural strengthening system was specified, and a design and build solution was completed by Structural Renovations.
This system comprises pultruded carbon fibre plates, which were bonded to the underside of the bridge structure with SikaDur 30, a specially formulated, cold cure epoxy adhesive.
Sika Carbudur plates are available in various widths, thicknesses and strengths.
Sika CarboDur is a fast and efficient system, with a tried and tested track record, offering high performance with good technical support.
The bridges were finally coated with SikaGard anti-carbonation protective coatings, to give long-term protection to the structures against weathering and aging.
Sika were able to provide a complete solution for this project, ensuring compatibility between the products and systems used, a high priority for Ringway Highway Services.
