Swan House Recoated With Sika
Swan House, a prominent Newcastle landmark, is being converted by Shepherd Construction Ltd from office use into 165 luxury apartments a development which will be known as 55 degrees north.
The total weight of the tower exceeds 30,000 tonnes.
Spinnaker Tower, which is based on a maritime design complete with billowing sail, was constructed by Mowlem Civil Engineers for Portsmouth City Council.
It has three public viewing platforms, situated between 100 and 110 metres from the ground, with great views across Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent.
These can be reached by an internal high-speed lift or an external panoramic lift running up the outside of one of two concrete shafts that form the core of the structure.
The external surface of the two shafts ( approximately 4,000 square metres), which were built using slip form construction, were rendered with Sika Icoment 520, a cementitious mortar to level and correct any irregularities in the concrete surfaces.
This was then over coated with SikaGard 550W elastic, a decorative, elastic anti-carbonation coating, which is water based with excellent resistance to weathering and aging, to protect and improve the appearance of the shafts.
The system was selected because of its long term track record approaching 20 years, and its BBA certification, stating that the coating will perform for a period of at least 15 years.
Now complete, Spinnaker Tower is the tallest building in Portsmouth, and dominates the Harbour skyline, providing a unique experience for both visitors and residents, with views over one of the busiest ports in the Country.
