Sika concrete repair mortars, anti-carbonation coatings and joint sealants are being used on the regeneration of the Grade ll Listed Brunswick Centre in Bloomsbury.

Sika concrete repair mortars, anti-carbonation coatings and joint sealants are being used on the regeneration of the Brunswick, a 1960's iconic concrete and glass structure covering over six acres in Bloomsbury The £20 million project is being undertaken by its owners, Allied London, who purchased the property in 1998

Allied London have been working with architects Levitt Bernstein, in conjunction with Patrick Hodgkinson, the original architect of the scheme, to oversee the re-development work, ensuring respect for the original design.

The building comprises over 500 flats, in two facing blocks, built over retail units, small offices and the Renoir Cinema, with two floors of underground parking for residents and shoppers.

The structure is built with both pre-cast and poured in-situ concrete panels.

Specialist contractors, Gunite (Eastern) , who were appointed by Main Contractors ISG Interior Exterior, are carrying out repairs to the concrete using the Sika MonoTop concrete repair system.

Sika MonoTop is a one part cementitious, high build repair and re-profiling repair mortar.

It is suitable for all types of structure, can be used externally and internally, is easy to mix and apply, has low shrinkage and is compatible with SikaGard coatings.

Following repair, the structure is being over-coated with SikaGard 680S anti-carbonation protective concrete coating.

This one component, decorative, flexible coating prevents water ingress and carbonation to all concrete structures, and is available as a matt colour finish, or as a clear glaze, for exposed aggregate concrete.

SikaGard 680S was chosen for this project because of its proven 20 year track record on similar projects.

Chlorides were found in localised areas of the structure, and this was resolved by the application of Sika FerroGard 903 corrosion inhibiting impregnation.

This is a preventative measure, providing corrosion protection to the reinforcing steel, and obviates the need for expensive removal and repair of the affected concrete.

Sikaflex-Pro 2HP high performance one part polyurethane sealant is being used to replace the failed expansion joints between the concrete panels.

On completion, the renovated Brunswick will greatly improve and transform the local environment, providing modern shopping and leisure facilities for both the local and surrounding areas.
