Sika CarboDur Plates Hold Up Bullring
Over a kilometre of Sika CarboDur carbon fibre plates has been installed during the refurbishment of the old Wades building.
Sika CarboDur is part of a structural strengthening system comprising of pultruded carbon fibre plates and SikaDur 30, a specially formulated two-part epoxy adhesive.
Over 1,300 metres of CarboDur plate has been bonded to the bridge.
This has been overcoated with SikaGard 550W, an elastic water based protective coating.
SikaGard 550W has excellent crack bridging and anti-carbonation properties, and is suitable for protecting any concrete structure that may be subject to cracking or cyclic movement.
Mott MacDonald, Area Managers for the Highways Agency, produced the design for the strengthening works.
They chose to use carbon fibre plates because of their durability, ease of application and light weight.
Interserve are the main contractors for the project.
Specialist contractors, Laser Special Projects, were sub-contracted to apply the Sika systems.
With a small workforce, Laser fitted the CarboDur plates quickly and efficiently, with no requirement for extra propping or fittings.
The light weight of the CarboDur plates was also a major advantage for access requirements to the working platform under the bridge.
By employing this system of using Sika CarboDur carbon fibre plates, the M3 was able to remain open throughout the strengthening, with no lane closures or speed restrictions.
