Sika coatings and repair systems help completely transform Fort Dunlop which had stood derelict since its closure more than a quarter of a century.

Located at the gateway to the Midlands, the iconic Fort Dunlop has been reinvented by award-winning developers, Urban Splash, as an inspirational commercial space In breathing new life into the landmark, Urban Splash worked in conjunction with architects, shedkm, and regional development agency, Advantage West Midland

Sika coatings and repair systems have been used extensively throughout the project, to completely transform this prestigious building which has stood derelict since its closure more than a quarter of a century.

Fort Dunlop was built in 1916 as a tyre store for the Dunlop Rubber Company.

A working village grew up around the building, and by the 1950s, more than 10,000 workers were working at Dunlop.

By 1980, the building was no longer needed and was closed down and left to fall derelict until this present exciting redevelopment.

A large extension has been built to the East of the building to incorporate a 100 bed hotel which is now open.

The entire development totals some 350,000 sqft, with much of the space devoted to design-led grade A specification office space.

The original concrete soffits, beams and columns are a feature of the interior design, which has maintained the original, industrial scale and style of the building.

Following repairs with the Sika MonoTop concrete repair system, specialist contractors, Prestec Limited, applied Sikacolor 671W, a one component protective coating in white, to produce a strong design statement to the interior.

Sika systems were used in other areas of the development.

The BBA approved Sika 1 Water-Proofing system was used in the basement and plant room areas to ensure a dry working environment, and Sika Construction Grout, a one part general purpose flowable grout was used for large repairs.

Sikaflex-PRO 2HP permanently elastic polyurethane construction sealant was used on the exterior construction joints.

This GBP40 million regeneration scheme is a continuation of the many changes and improvements that have recently taken place in Birmingham City centre, creating a striking and favourable impression to the many motorists passing by on the adjacent M6 motorway.

Sika has recently supplied over 5,000 metres of their Sika CarboDur carbon fibre structural strengthening system to Rotunda in Birmingham centre, another successful apartment redevelopment by Urban Splash.
