Sika structural strengthening systems are being used in the renovation of 82m tall St Georges Tower in the centre of Leicester.

This major GBP20 million project by Pettifer Construction for Magnet Properties will see the conversion of this former BT and Royal Mail building into a mixed use development comprising living accommodation, office space, a hotel, retail and an area for parking The addition of extra floors meant that the concrete beams and columns supporting the new structures required substantial strengthening

Specialist contractors Gunite bonded approximately 1,000 metres of Sika CarboDur carbon fibre plates to the underside of the beams, which were then wrapped in SikaWrap Hex 230C carbon fibre fabric to add tensile and flexural strength.

The Sika Carbodur system comprises pultruded carbon fibre plates, which are bonded to the concrete structure with SikaDur 30, a specially formulated, cold cure epoxy adhesive.

SikaWrap Hex 230C is a light, uni-directional carbon fibre fabric that is bonded with SikaDur 330 epoxy laminating resin to provide a dry composite strengthening system.

It is ideal for use in confined spaces and can be wrapped around complex shapes.

Using the versatile Sika structural strengthening system has the advantage of high strength with light weight and low aesthetic impact.
